Hello Ladies! As promised, I have a new "Natural Spotted". I owe this lady a huge apology, her feature was expected to be up in late January (i know i know....bad me!). I've been super excited to get her on Limitless, as she has been natural for some time now, and her style is super cute....There is a je ne sais quoi about her...! Its more than confidence that stands out...
Maybe its the personality and character that shines through her beauty! I am magnetized to her locs, her lovely golden skin, her gorgeous artwork and eye for photography. Read below...This girl is overflowing with charm!
Ms Corinthia McCoy.... and her beautiful natural hair! |
1. How long have you been natural? I started my natural hair journey September 2007. I have been natural for about 5 going in 6 years
2. What where some of the biggest deciding factors in your decision to go natural? Some of the key factors that played into me going natural was my desire to no longer comb my hair. I had been wearing my natural for about two years. This involved roller set fro's, braids, twist extensions before I made my decision. This gave me lots of time to think about making that big move and I knew that I didn't enjoy combing, and taking out and putting in braids. I knew it was time for locs. I also wanted to remain natural but at the same time have longer hair.
3. Who/what was your inspiration? Some of my inspirations included my Winona Studies professor Kennedy Kodogo, Goapele, and a few other loc wearers in my circle. My parents and friends have been very supportive of this decision I have made.
4. Did you have any reservations about going natural? What were your family and friends responses when you did it? My mom is always commenting on how long my hair is every time I come home. My dad is glad that I don't have any color or I'm not frying my hair out...lol. My friends have been really supportive. They also comment on how long they [my locs] are getting, and always have positive feedback on the new styles that I wear. I have even inspired a few of my friends to go natural, and even get locs. When deciding to get locs I had no reservations at all. Some people feel that by having locs, you are limited. I disagree. I actually believe the main way that a person is limited is by wearing their hair straight; and with me not wanting to comb my hair that cancels that [straight hair] out. As far as cutting my hair at the end of my journey (who knows when that will be) I plan to have locs for a long time. I'm not really worried at this point about cutting them off...I love the idea of going short.
5. What is your go-to product? And go-to hairstyle? I have a very long list of go-to products and I'm always trying new products. But my too consistently used products are as follows: oils- Coconut, tea tree, africa's best oil. For twisting: Organic Root Stimulator lock and twist gel, edge control, Herbal essence totally twisted mousse. Shampoo/conditioner: Garnier Fructis triple nutrition. Garnier Fructis Triple Nutrition products, Herbal Essence Degunkify Shampoo and Conditioner. And Organic Root Stimulator Replenishing Pack (deep penetrating conditioner).
My favorite hairstyle to wear while wearing locs is after washing, conditioning, and oiling my locs down I like to double strand twist my locs, and wear cute updos, and ponytails, and then take the twists out and wear my hair down and wavy.
6. What do you love about being Natural? What I love about natural hair is the freedom and the close connection that you have with your own hair without added hair or your hair being chemically or heat altered. I love the fact that I don't have to comb my hair, and how I appreciate my hair so much more now that it's natural. I love the fact that people find my natural hair beautiful, and it's simply put, a real and beautiful experience of getting to know your hair in it's natural state.
7. Aside from your natural hair, what are your passionate about? What do you do for a living? My passion is art: I'm a photographer, and I paint and make jewelry as well.
8. Is there anywhere we can follow your Natural Hair Journey or what you are doing in the community?
To follow my natural hair care journey you can go to my facebook page under the album skinny black to see different styles and looks. I am also starting a photography project in which I will capture pictured and back ground stories of women in LA wearing, and going natural..stay tuned.. I would just like to say I think it's awesome that we have natural hair communities to keep each other encourage and positive about the choices being made, as well as see other women making the same or similar choices. We need that. I look in black hair magazines and we are still under represented, and in hollywood it's barely seen. And it can be hard for those who are considering going natural. I just want to say to those who are thinking about it is it's not a easy path, your going to have issues..But if you can just persevere through that you can see the beauty of having natural hair, and it's a feeling that comes with it that you can't get from anywhere else and a strength that you radiate. It's very empowering and I encourage for women who are thinking about it to try it, and surround yourself with a natural hair community.
Anything else you'd like to share? Thank you for this opportunity to share my story Sade, and if you have any more questions feel free to just ask, or tell whoever is interested to add me as a friend on Facebook!
